Microbiota: Overview and implication in immunotherapy-based cancer treatments

During the last few years, the gut microbiota has gained increasing attention as a consequence of its emerging role as a modulator of the immune system. With the advent of the era of checkpoint inhibitors immunotherapy and adoptive cell transfer (ACT) in oncology, these findings became of primary relevance in light of experimental data that suggested the microbiota involvement as a plausible predictor of a good or poor response. These remarks justify the efforts to pinpoint the specific actions of the microbiota and to identify new strategies to favorably edit its composition

On the interplay between multiscaling and stocks dependence

We find a nonlinear dependence between an indicator of the degree of multiscaling of log-price time series of a stock and the average correlation of the stock with respect to the other stocks traded in the same market. This result is a robust stylized fact holding for different financial markets. We investigate this result conditional on the stocks' capitalization and on the kurtosis of stocks' log-returns in order to search for possible confounding effects. We show that a linear dependence with the logarithm of the capitalization and the logarithm of kurtosis does not explain the observed stylized fact, which we interpret as being originated from a deeper relationship.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, 9 table

Inibição do crescimento micelial e da germinação de esporos de Thielaviopsis paradoxa por Bacillus subtilis e Bacillus pumilus.

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de Bacillus pumilus (QST 2808) e Bacillus subtilis (QST 713) na inibição da germinação de esporos e no crescimento micelial de Thielaviopsis paradoxa, agente causal da podridão abacaxi da cana-de-açúcar. O primeiro teste avaliou a taxa de crescimento micelial do patógeno em placas de Petri, totalizando 15 placas em três tratamentos (inoculação simultânea; 24 horas e 48 horas após o bioagente). Em seguida avaliou o crescimento micelial na presença dos metabólitos produzidos pelos agentes de biocontrole, adicionados ao meio batata-dextrose-ágar, em cinco concentrações (10%; 1%; 0,1%; 0,01%; 0,001%). No teste de germinação avaliou-se o porcentual de germinação dos conídios na presença dos agentes de biocontrole nas concentrações citadas anteriormente. Ambos os agentes de biocontrole apresentaram efeitos antagônicos significativos contra o patógeno, com destaque para B. subtilis

The human microbiomes in pancreatic cancer: Towards evidence-based manipulation strategies?

Recent pieces of evidence have emerged on the relevance of microorganisms in modulating responses to anticancer treatments and reshaping the tumor-immune microenvironment. On the one hand, many studies have addressed the role of the gut microbiota, providing interesting correlative findings with respect to etiopathogenesis and treatment responses. On the other hand, intra-tumoral bacteria are being recognized as intrinsic and essential components of the cancer microenvironment, able to promote a plethora of tumor-related aspects from cancer growth to resistance to chemotherapy. These elements will be probably more and more valuable in the coming years in early diagnosis and risk stratification. Furthermore, microbial-targeted intervention strategies may be used as adjuvants to current therapies to improve therapeutic responses and overall survival.
